Kolkata rape: TMC defends Mamata's comment

Kolkata: The first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal is in a spot. Just days after she said that the 37-year-old woman from Kolkata, who was raped at gunpoint in a moving car, was a part of a bigger conspiracy to malign her government, the arrest of three people by the police has embarrassed her. The opposition is furious.

CPM leader Biman Bose said, "It is most unfortunate that a woman chief minister passes comment without getting proper information and doubted the victim's complaint calling it a conspiracy to malign the government."

"Her comments were unnecessary. The government shouldn't have doubted the victim's credibility. She was victimised even more. The government should say sorry to the victim," WBPCC General Secretary Om Prakash Mishra said.

The Trinamool, though, remains defiant. It says the chief minister has nothing to say sorry for.

"Mamata should not apologies, absolutely not. Mamata is also the Home Minister of the state. At that time, she got some initial intelligence and she made her comments based on that. Even the police commissioner had echoed her views," TMC MP Shukhendu Shekhar Roy said.

Meanwhile the three accused who were arrested on Saturday have been sent to police custody till March 3. The main rape suspect is still at large.

It's a case that highlighted the sexual prejudices that still lurk in our society which makes it so difficult for rape victims' to come out and seek justice. With the Chief Minister of the state, also a woman, doubting the victim's claims even before the probe was over, has put the government in an embarrassing position.
